Victor Wembanyama wants to be the best in all areas, even with his jersey number.
The 7’4” San Antonio Spurs superstar is set for his second year in the NBA after taking the league by storm in his debut season.

He averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds per game, proving to be one of the best rookies in NBA history, claiming the Rookie of the Year award.
The Frenchman looks destined to become a superstar and there’s no surprise when hearing about his mentality, which is the reason why he wears the number one…
Why does Wembanyama wear No.1?
Wembanyama chooses to wear No.1 as he wants to be the best.
The 20-year-old does not lack in confidence and even before he made his NBA debut, he was aiming for the top.
He was asked about his choice of number after being selected as the No.1 pick in the 2023 draft and joining the Spurs.
And explaining his decision on his team’s YouTube channel, he said: “It feels like I always should have worn this jersey.
“It’s really a mentality you know. Number one, as for me there’s no other option but to be number one.
“I can’t accept to be behind someone in some way and not being the best.”
It’s fair to say that this attitude has been backed up by Wembanyama so far in the NBA, as he stars for the Spurs.
He’ll be hoping to reach new levels this season though, and make sure he’s ahead of all of his competitors as the true No.1.

But for France, he wears a different number on his jerseyGetty
Wembanyama also represents France on the international stage and claimed a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.
But while playing for his country, he dons the No.32 instead of No.1.
That is in tribute to one of his idols – Lakers icon Magic Johnson.
Johnson was known for his unique style on the court and Wembanyama certainly has his own way of playing too.
He heads into his second season in the NBA looking to take a step up.
And longtime Rockets and NBA beat writer for the Houston Chronicle, Jonathan Feigen, has identified how he can do just that.
Feigen exclusively told talkSPORT: “What I think needs to come next — and it seems obvious, but it’s not what’s spoken about most often — he needs to be the man.
“To where, the game on the line, they go to him, he makes the play.
“It’s not that he has to score like crazy. He will draw double teams because he’s Wemby.
“But they need to have their fate in his hands, more than they would expect of him as a rookie.”
