However, the Red Devils agreed to allow him to remain in charge of Sporting for three more matches.

His final match takes place on Sunday night away to Braga ahead of the international break.

Amorim was then to start at Old Trafford on Monday, with his first United match against Ipswich on November 24.

His long-awaited arrival has now set to be pushed back once more.

That’s because the Portuguese coach is still waiting for a work permit.

As a result he will be unable to officially start his role as United manager as planned.

The club remain confident the issue will be resolved in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Amorim’s had not planned to take his first training session until the second week of the international break.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been in interim charge for the club’s last four matches since Ten Hag’s exit.

The last of those matches saw the Red Devils beat Leicester 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

It means Van Nistelrooy ends his temporary spell as boss unbeaten with three wins and a draw.

United are currently 13th but sit just four points off the top four after their fourth league win of the season.

Amorim took charge of his final home match for Sporting on Tuesday night as they humiliated Manchester City in the Champions League.

A hat-trick from Viktor Gyokeres inspired his side to a 4-1 thumping Champions League victory over City.

During four years as manager, Amorim won two league titles, with the club also winning all ten league matches so far this term.
