Wimbledon winner who married fan she met in a park gets new job after retirement

Garbiñe Muguruza has got a new job after ending her decorated tennis career last year.

The Spaniard retired in April 2024 after a 12-year career that saw her win two grand slams in two years.

Beating Serena Williams in 2016 and Venus Williams in 2017, Muguruza won the French Open and Wimbledon as she established herself as the WTA’s number one player on the planet.

But after after calling it a day, the 31-year-old has now been announced as the new ambassador for Tennis Channel.

She’ll also be the TV face of the multi-platform, serving as a presenter for Tennis Channel Spain this year.

Muguruza will make her debut in this new role at the WTA 1000 Doha Open this week and will continue covering the rest of the WTA 1000 tournaments of the season, as well as the WTA Finals.

Explaining her role, she Muguruza said: “Throughout my playing career, I have witnessed the birth and growth of Tennis Channel in the United States.

“They were there for some of my most special moments—when I won Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the WTA Finals in Mexico.

“They are a key part of the global tennis circuit, and I’m thrilled that they thought of me for their expansion into Spain.

She added: “We are a country of great champions and passionate tennis fans, so I hope that with Tennis Channel’s arrival, we can present the sport that has given me so much in a more modern, engaging way.

“I’m confident that, through our exclusive content, fans will gain a deeper insight into professional tennis.

“It’s a spectacular opportunity, and I’m eager to get started.”

While her new job will be an exciting new focus for Muguruza, the former tennis star embarked on another exciting new journey last year.

The 31-year-old got married in October to a fan who asked her for a selfie in the park – no, seriously.

Speaking to HOLA! Spain, the former WTA world number one, previously explained how she ended up falling in love with a man who had asked for a selfie with her.

“My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,” she explained.

“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome.’”

That fan turned out to be model, Arthur Borges, with the pair meeting four years after her Wimbledon triumph.

Now married with an exciting new job, things are looking up for Muguruza as she prepares for life off the court.
