Aston Villa make the short trip across the West Midlands to Molineux on Saturday fresh from booking their place in the Round of 16 of the Champions League following their 4-2 home win over Celtic on Wednesday night which saw them break into the top eight.

The victory for Unai Emery’s side ended their three match winless run, and sees attention now turn back to the Premier League, a competition they are unbeaten in their last five games in, but will be wanting to improve on their current league position of eighth.

Despite their lowly position in the league following their fourth-place finish last season, the Villans are only three points off the top six and just four off the top four, gaps they will be looking to close with a victory over one of their local rivals this weekend.

Wolves head into this weekend having lost each of their last four Premier League matches, a run which has seen them drop back into the relegation zone after an initial upturn in form following the appointment of Vitor Pereira as manager in December.

The team picked up seven points from the Portuguese’s first three games in charge, but have lost their last four games in the Premier League since, and now sit a point adrift of safety in the relegation zone after Leicester’s win at Tottenham last weekend.

They take on a Villa side this weekend who have won only one of their last seven away league games, though Wolves themselves have lost four of their last five matches in front of their home fans in all competitions.

Only Southampton have picked up fewer points at home in the Premier League this season than Wolves, a record they will be looking to set straight with an important victory against their West Midlands rivals on Saturday evening to see them climb out of the drop zone.

Wolves have won only one of their last five games against Aston Villa, losing their most recent two meetings, though the Villans have only won once at Molineux in the last 13 years.
