However, he went down with an apparent back problem late on in the match following a coming together with Newcastle’s Fabian Schar.

Welbeck was in visible pain when lying on the turf and quickly attended to by medical staff.

The 33-year-old was then given what appeared to be the painkiller Penthrox, which is also commonly known as a green whistle.

Paramedics carried him off the pitch on a stretcher and both sets of fans applauded the striker as he left the field of play.

talkSPORT understands he was taken to hospital straight away, with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler confirming he is undergoing a scan.

When asked how Welbeck is, he replied: “I don’t know yet, we have to wait for the scans, then we can give an update.

“At the moment I can’t say anything.”

Welbeck’s injury will mar Brighton’s fourth Premier League win of the season that has taken them to fifth in the table.

The former Manchester United and Arsenal man’s winning finish at Newcastle was his 100th goal contribution in the top flight.

He has now reached 71 goals and 29 assists across 340 Premier League appearances, doing so for five different clubs – Manchester United, Sunderland on loan, Arsenal, Watford and now Brighton.

Welbeck’s latest goal was also his fourth for the season so far to put him joint-fourth in the rankings with Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

The forward has netted against Everton, United. Nottingham Forest and now Newcastle to extend his overall Brighton goal tally to 30.

It remains to be seen as to when he will return to action for the club following his injury.

Brighton next host Wolves before two consecutive matches against Liverpool, first in the Carabao Cup and then the Premier League.

They will then travel to reigning champions Manchester City in their final game before the November international break.
