Wrexham v Barnsley predictions

Second placed Wrexham host sixth placed Barnsley in League One on Tuesday night in a huge match regarded the battle for both automatic promotion and the play-off race as League One heads into the frantic festive period.

Wrexham head into the midweek clash have won each of their last two matches, and boast by far the best home record in the third tier, having won 10 and drawn one of their 11 games at the Racecourse Ground in all competitions so far this season, where they haven’t so much as conceded in their last five matches.

Phil Parkinson’s side also have the added benefit of having received a bit of time off over the weekend, in which they didn’t play due to having not reached the second round of the FA Cup.

The Red Dragons head into the midweek round of matches second in the League One table, four points shy of league leaders Wycombe and one point clear of Birmingham, who chase their second and final automatic promotion place.

Barnsley make the trip to Wales having not won any of their last four matches, most recently having been dumped out of the FA Cup via a penalty shoot out after a goalless draw at home against Bristol Rovers.

Darrell Clarke’s side have impressed on the road this season though, unbeaten in four away from home with only the league leaders having picked up more points on the road than the Tykes so far this campaign.

The Yorkshire side currently occupy sixth place in the final play-off position, level on points with both Reading and Bolton in the chasing park, who lurk just below them on goal difference, while Barnsley will be looking to climb back ahead of Huddersfield with a win and into the top five.

Tuesday night’s meeting between the two teams will be the first time the sides have met since 2005, with Barnsley having won only one of their last seven matches against Wrexham dating back to 1972, and have never won away from home against the Welsh opposition in their history.

Tuesday’s clash is set to be a tight and tense affair between two sides with aspirations of promotion come the end of the season, though Wrexham’s back to back wins and fantastic home record compared with Barnsley being without a win in four games leads me to believe a 2-0 home win is in store.

Wrexham v Barnsley betting tips

Wrexham have kept clean sheets in each of their last five home matches, winning 10 of their 11 games at the Racecourse Ground in all competitions this season, and I can’t see a Barnsley side without a win in four games being able to put an end to either of those records.

Welsh centre back Max Cleworth is Wrexham’s joint-leading goal scorer in all competitions this season, having bagged five goals this campaign despite only previously having scored three goals in his career prior to the start of this season.

A major set piece threat, the 23-year-old scored a crucial early opener in the Red Dragons’ 3-0 win over Exeter 10 days ago, and will prove a huge handful for the Barnsley defenders on Tuesday night.
