Young Boys v Aston Villa preview
Aston Villa return to Europe’s elite this week for the first time since their run to the quarter finals of the European Cup in 1983, which came just a year after being crowned champions of the continent with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.
The West Midlands side are now back in the European big time following last season’s fourth placed finish in the Premier League, and kick off their campaign with a trip to Switzerland to take on Young Boys.
Unai Emery’s side have started the new season well with three wins from their opening four matches, most recently coming from two goals down to beat Everton on Saturday evening leaving them fifth in the table, with just goal difference separating them from the top four.
The only side the Villans have dropped points against this season are an Arsenal team widely expected to be competing for the Premier League title come the end of the season, having finished runners up in each of the last two years.
Emery manager has enjoyed success on the European stage before on several occasions, winning the Europa League with Sevilla on three back-to-back occasions from 2014 to 2016, and Villa will be hopeful that his European expertise will be able to guide the club through to the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League.

Aston Villa’s first game back in the Champions League will be against the reigning Swiss champions, finishing 12 points clear at the top of the Super League, though currently sit rock bottom of the table without a win in six games this time around.
Despite their discouragingly slow start to the league campaign, Patrick Rahmen’s side head into Tuesday’s Champions League opener having won four of their last five games in all competitions, and unbeaten in their last seven.
Two of those victories came in the Swiss Cup against lower league opposition, though the winning run also includes victories home and away against current Turkish champions Galatasaray in the play-off round to qualify for the league phase of this season’s Champions League.
Tuesday’s match will be the first ever meeting between the two sides but Emery has managed against the Swiss side before, winning both games against them while in charge of Villarreal in the group stage of the 2021-22 competition en route to the semi finals.
Young Boys v Aston Villa betting tips
Aston Villa will no doubt be fired up for their first Champions League appearance in nearly 42 years, and come up in favourable opposition in their first outing, against whom they will back themselves for victory.
Ollie Watkins got himself back in form on Saturday with a brace against Everton to open his goal scoring account, while Jhon Duran scored his third of the season, all off the bench, with a stunning winner, which leaves the striker averaging a goal every 34 minutes of playing time.
bet365’s 10/1 odds of Aston Villa to win, both teams to score and Watkins and Duran both to score, looks a sensible bet that could well come through.
